Comic Con 2010 - the Sum up (Part 1)

It has taken almost two weeks to decompress from the five days that were Comic Con. By now, the Internet is over flowing with news, pictures, and leaks from the various blogs, geeks, and media groups that were in attendance. Hopefully, you have also gotten a chance to go back through the Brightboy Adventures and peruse the recently uploaded slideshow (if you haven't, take a moment, I'll wait... ... ...ok.) The event sold out months in advance to over 100,000 people and the crowds were clear indications of that number. To put it simply, I had a blast! Four days of panels, gathering SWAG, and talking geek with other nerds was the perfect vacation. There were a few bumps in the trip (early morning lines and less giveaways than normal) but the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

The biggest highlights of the weekend were not comic books. Hollywood officially took over this year. Movies and TV panels were the highest attended sessions and some for good reason. In terms of movies that made waves, there was: the Marvel superhero movies, TRON, Green Lantern and a few lesser known superhero movies (Megamind & RED), as well as, non-superhero flicks like the Expendables, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and a new Haunted Mansion movie. The biggest news of the weekend was by far, the announcement of the cast for the upcoming ensemble movie from Marvel, The Avengers (see Comic con post 4.4). The official announcement of Mark Ruffalo taking on the role of Bruce Banner/the Incredible Hulk was made at the end of Saturday to a packed crowd in Hall H. Announced by Robert Downey Jr. who will reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the film, Downey also made the first official announcement of Jeremy Renner (the Hurt Locker) as the superhero archer, Hawkeye for the Avengers team. It was a great scene on stage to see all of the cast onstage for the first time ever - every geek in the room was on cloud 9. My personal favorite highlight of the movie panels was hearing Ryan Reynolds say the Lantern's oath during Warner Bros. Studios panel for the Green Lantern movie coming out next summer. The footage from Green Lantern and seeing the cast onstage built up a lot of excitement for me, I've been waiting for a live action film version of this character since I was a kid. Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen hosted a short panel and built excitement by hosting an offsite event based on the film - a replica of Britt Reid's garage including the Black Beauty car from the film. The movie has a growing following and the con definitely helped. One other movie had a huge presence at the Comic con, but not from its movie panel - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. A new movie starring Michael Cera (Superbad) as Scott Pilgrim who must battle his new girlfriend's evil ex-boyfriends. To market at Comic Con, the film came up with a promo called Scott Pilgrim vs. the Comic Con. Members of the cast participated in events like custom tshirt making for fans across the street from the convention center as well as kareoke like activities and passing out all types of movie SWAG. The movie will have a big following among teens this August, and rightfully so, its a good movie. As far as TV panels go, The Big Bang Theory, True Blood, Pscyh, White Collar, and Burn Notice were the most popular of the bunch. No Ordinary Family, a new ABC channel show starring Michael Chiklis, made a big mark on the con too. No Ordinary Family is about a family of four that develop superhuman powers on a family vacation and as they come to grips with their new abilities they become close as a family and a new heroic team for the world. Look for it this fall. Stargate Universe and Caprica served up great details for their science fictions fans. Bones stars Emily Deschanel and David Boreanez served up some comedic moments for all their fans and teased that a member of the main cast will die this season.

to be continued...
