New Expo brings back the classic Comic Con traditions

I am just barely recuperating after this past weekend. The excitement, the crowds, the uniforms; it was all pretty epic. No, I’m not talking about that jock event, I’m referring to the first Inland Empire Comic Expo hosted by Forbidden Panel at the Fox Events Center in Redlands, California. The expo represented all facets of the comic book world – Zombies, Superheroes, Sci-Fi, Manga. The guys over at Forbidden Panel (www.forbiddenpanel.com) did a great job getting artists, cosplayers, live music, comic retailers, and even booze into one venue and got back to the roots of the comic shows of old – when it was about the fans.

The Fox Events Center is a former Fox Theater and was a great venue to get fifty or more booths set up. There were stores selling action figures and comic books, artists and writers autographing their books and prints, as well as costume clubs from many different worlds. Star Wars was represented by 3 “factions,” the 501st Legion (complete with a towering Darth Vader from the Inland Empire Squadron), The Rebel Legion (including Princess Leia all ear-bunned up), and the Saber Guild who performed a light saber dual on stage for the crowds.

Cobra Night Watch was there to represent the evil side of the G.I. Joe world and the Ghostbusters were on sight to keep the paranormal spirits at hand (including their Ecto-1)

The day went on with two costume contests and two raffles. And for what I think was the first time ever, a cosplayer dressed as a “Red Shirt,” a la Star Trek fame, took the first contest and the “forgotten Disney princess” from the Mouse’s Black Cauldron took the second round. Additionally, there was live music performing on stage and one of the best snack bars ever at a comic show with beer sales, as well as, omelets, nachos and the other usual goodies.
In the last half a year, I have attended several shows that called themselves “Cons” and I must say it is my BIGGEST fanboy pet peeve. If you’re going to call your event a comic con then you better entertain your attendees and do more than sell comic books. The Inland Empire Comic Expo really impressed me. The location was well-suited with its old-fashioned theater decor and large space for moving around without bumping into people with every turn. The semi-dim lighting in the room also set the mood for the whole day. There was a variety of booths that provided variety for my many fanboy tastes. In addition, I liked the ability to sit and talk with artists and cosplayers; it felt like a community.
The expo was also a big day for Fanboy Headquarters. This was the first time Fanboy HQ was exhibiting too. Hotshot and I, dressed as Green Hornet and Kato respectively, shared free comic books, posters, buttons and stickers with the attendees. Recruiting new fans to the headquarters. We owe serious credit to Heather and Jessica who helped out at the booth all day. And a shout out to Ron V. and Kim B. for their contributions for the day.
Finally, I want to recognize A.J. Herrera and Forbidden Panel for putting on a phenomenal show. It was great to attend an event that lived up to it’s name as a comic book show. The group has already planned their second expo for September 4, 2011. Keep an eye on Fanboy Headquarters for more information about the next Inland Empire Comic Expo.
