Scott Pilgrim vs. the Expendables

Friday the 13th has come and gone and two big movies have squared off, with only one being the winner. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The Expendables both debuted this past weekend, along with Eat, Pray, Love. Also still in contention for the top box office charts, were the films Inception and the Other Guys. The big question of the summer was who would win the battle between Scott Pilgrim and The Expendables, the winner of the weekend may surprise you.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is based off of a graphic novel and includes action, comedy, animated effects and a rocking soundtrack, not too mention, a great cast of characters. Aimed at the comic book lovers and teenagers everywhere, the movie is about a guy trying to date a girl, but he has to defeat her seven evil exes first. At this summer's San Diego Comic Con, the film had a large presence with the tagline: Scott Pilgrim vs. Comic Con. The cast was on hand to sign autographs, pass out all kinds of SWAG, hosted a special, themed area at a hotel courtyard across from the convention center, and posted a gigantic advertisement down the entire side of the Bayfront Hilton facing the convention center for the weekend.

The Expendables is a return the classic action movies of the 1980's-90's. Sylvester Stallone co-wrote and directed the film that brings togther some of the best action heroes from the "old days." No computer enhanced fight scenes or superheroic powers, all the action is fist-to-face, bullet filled bodies, and big, loud explosions. The Expendables are a group of mercanaries that get hired for the jobs no other team can do. This time around the mission is to face off against a General and his army who have control an island nation and rule with a powerful hand while reaping the benefits of drug sales. The Expendables also made an appearance at Comic Con including a star studded panel of the actions stars, a booth on the Exhibit Hall floor, and giveaways of posters, tshirts, bandanas, and temporary tattoos from the film.

While Brightboy Adventures tend to lean toward movies that are based on comic books a little more, we can't wait to see the Expendables in action too (there is a comic book out that is based on the movie). There can only be one victor in this David vs. the Goliaths battle and it was the giant men of the weekend, the Expendables. The International Movie Database (http://www.imdb.com/chart/) is reporting that The Expendables came in first place for the weekend with $35 million in box office sales. The surprise about Scott Pilgrim was that it took fifth place! Eat, Pray, Love starring Julia Roberts won over women and the number two spot. The Other Guys with Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg took third and Inception continued to dominate moviegoers in fourth place. There are many theories out there as to why Scott Pilgrim didn't make it to the top three (they picked a bad weekend to open, the hype had died down, The Expendables was more of a draw to the comic book fans this weekend instead, so on and so forth). If you saw the films this weekend, post your thoughts below. If you haven't seen the movies, get out there and figure out which one was better.

Watch for our Scott Pilgrim vs. the World review soon. And although not a comic book movie, we will review the Expendables too. Check back often!
