"Scott Pilgrim" Vs "The Expendables" My Thoughts

Yesterday, Brightboy and I went to see "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World". We didn't see it on opening weekend because like everybody else, we went to go watch "The Expendables". "Scott Pilgrim" is based on a graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley and the film is directed by Edgar Wright.

The opening credits of "Scott Pilgrim" had an 8-bit logo and the cool 8-bit music to go along with it (which I for one thought was pretty cool.) What really makes this movie stand out among the others is the use of graphics onscreen like meters, sound effects, stats, etc.. to the extend of a comic book or video game. Me being such a game and comic book fan found some of these graphics pretty cool and liked the homage to "old school" 8-bit gaming. Other times I found it a little bothersome because it made the screen "a little busy" with all kinds of other things going on. All in all, I think the movie accomplished what it set to do and faithfully recreate the graphic novel into a live action feature film. Though it accomplished this, box office performance was not so great.

"The Expendables" on the other hand, was a movie that just jam-packed the action from start to finish. It would have been great to have had some more interaction between the characters, but that wasn't the point of the movie. The point was to have action and plenty of it. I must say, that after watching this movie, I had the urge to want to blow something up. Since there were no explosives around, and not mention a illegal, I just went a few rounds on "Modern Warfare 2" to get my fix.

"Scott Pilgrim" opened up on Friday August 13, 2010, which should have made studio execs think twice before releasing a movie on such an ominous date. Also "The Expendables", a movie which includes practically every action hero since like, ever (Stallone, Lundgren, Schwarzenegger, Rourke, Willis... You get my point) opened on the same day. Maybe the studio was banking on the younger teeny bopper crowd to skip out on "Expendables" and go watch "Scott Pilgrim" instead. What happened was that some of the teeny bopper crowd that they had banked on going to watch their movie on opening weekend, went with there parents (or some other adult or 'legal guardian') to go watch the action packed "Expendables". Don't get me wrong, "Scott Pilgrim" does have action, but nothing beats good ol' fashion explosions and gunfights that the former contains that the latter does not. Sadly that translated to poor box office performance for "Scott Pilgrim" (Hell... Julia Roberts' "Eat, Pray, Love" beat it at the box office).

Both films had considerable presence at Comic-Con this year. "Scott Pilgrim" had a few viewings as well. I feel that the studio execs should have capitalized on the buzz generated from Comic-Con and opened the movie sooner to avoid the poor performance the movie has had thus far. The movie may not be a box office masterpiece, but I do see it developing a cult following when it is released to DVD and Blu-ray. "The Expendables" on the other hand is a movie that will definitely become a classic action movie just because of the face that they were able to cram so many action heroes into one movie.

Anybody care to share their thoughts on these movies?
